Recently, some (not all) of our email have not been received by outside users. I was thinking it could be due to SPAM filtering but when I ran SMTPDIAG it brought up this error: Checking MX servers listed for user@mycompany.com. Connecting to mail.companyXYZ.com [192.168.0.10] on port 25. Connecting to the server failed. Error: 10060 Failed to submit mail to mail.companyXYZ.com. I get this error even to mail domains that users receive our email. Why is our outgoing mail trying to connect to the firewall interface address?? Any comments or suggestions are greatly welcome! When you send mail to certain domains the recipients server will perform a reverse lookup on your e-mail, so if you send an e-mail from your exchange server the reverse lookup will expect to find the ip address of your exchange servers external address. You can either contact your isp and ask them to add a ptr entry or use a smart host to send your mail (configurable in the routing group connector) 0 Sonora OP Dagoof2k8 Feb 4, 2010 at 12:53 UTC Hi Air, I already looked into the PTR record and had it changed but I still get the same error when I run SMTPDIAG. I also checked my local DNS server and I do not have any MX record entries. I was investigation why SMTPDIAG queries the 192.168.0.10 address (Outside interface of our firewall when it does its check. Any ideas where SMTPDIAG is resolving that MX address? 0 Poblano OP kursat4349 Feb 28, 2011 at 3:58 UTC i've the same code 10060. i've no problem with my PTR records. i realised that im in some blacklists. for this the remote server rejects me. anyway, add MX records to your local DNS and test it. or use -d switch with smtpdiag for using any dns server you want. and check your route by route print command (if you have two NIC there might be a problem with their metrics). al least mine was that a pieces of. 0 Pimiento OP dkiernan Aug 30, 2014 at 2:34 UTC KC Computers is an IT service provider. I know this is an old thread, but I stumbled across it, so I thought I'd throw my solution out in case someone is wandering through the interwebz with the same issue. We have an ISA firewall 2006, Within our domain we have an exchange server https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/26819494/SMTP-Diag-error.html 2003 and of course our internal DNS. A few days ago mail stopped working no one can send or receive. When i looked into the server event viewer, i see this error "Message delivery to the host '98.137.54.237' failed while delivering to the remote domain 'rocketmail.com' for the following reason: The remote server did not respond to a connection attempt." When i ran SMTP DIAG i get the following results C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator.NXUBA\Desktop\SmtpDiag>smtpdiag administ rator@nxuba.gov.za motseperl@telkom.co.za Searching for Exchange external DNS settings. Computer name is NXUBA-MX1. VSI 1 has the following external DNS servers: There are no external DNS servers configured. Checking SOA for telkom.co.za. Checking external DNS servers. server to confirm that all the conditions required for successful mail delivery were met. The tool tests SMTP and DNS. Click here to download the tool.Once downloaded run SmtpDiag.EXE and extract the files to a location of your http://www.vsysad.com/2012/05/testing-smtp-server-on-server-2008-r2/ choice. Then open a command prompt, go to that location and run the following command:smtpdiag from@yourdomain.com recipient@theirdomain.comThe first parameter from@yourdomain.com is the email address that the tool is sending the email from and the second parameter recipient@theirdomain.com is the receiving email address. The tool will run through a basic set of tests and will flag any issues it encounters. To view more diagnostic information run the same smtpdiag error command with a /v switch at the end.smtpdiag from@yourdomain.com recipient@theirdomain.comA sample test I ran can be seen below:You can see that the recipient has a Gmail address so the tool will test name resolution for the domain gmail.com and comfirm it has the relevant MX records. You will notice that the first test result shows this failure:Failed to connect to the domain controller. Error: 8007054bThis error can be ignored as the server is not an smtpdiag error Exchange server and it not part of an Active Directory domain. The results confirm that SMTP and DNS resolution is working fine! You can also use telnet and Powershell to test mail sending/routing via SMTP Server. Thanks for posting this. Is there any firewall configuration that must be made beforehand? Thanks. japinator Hi Saint. Regarding firewall config, the first thing to do is open outbound traffic on port 25 as the SMTP Server uses this port. Do not open inbound port 25 traffic as it is not advisable to run the SMTP Server as a mail relay. Another issue to pay attention to is DNS, this must be working on the server in order to route mail successfully. Hope this helps.Pingback: Testing SMTP Server fr
